As part of the research for the Pilot Marine Protected Area at Race Rocks, in the spring of 1999, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans commissioned a study by the Canadian Hydrographic Service of the sea floor around Race Rocks using advanced acoustical bathymetry techniques .
