opalia The White Spiral Snail Opalia
This underwater photo of Opalia sp. a rare white spiral Gastropod was captured on video by David Roman (PC, yr23) in October, 1997.
opalia This first photograph of this species at Race Rocks was taken by Johan Ashuvud and G.Fletcher in 1980. David and Garry's dive in 1997 was planned specifically to try to find this species of snail again and indeed they found it in the same location. It can be found on the main cliff, west of the docks, subtidal at 8-10m meters depth.(location Peg 3, Depth 8.5m) Typically it is always found on small patches of white shell fragments at the base of a cliff.

falcon Peregrine Falcon.. Seen yearly in the winter time:
pelican
In Late September to mid October of 1997, Brown Pelicans were sighted roosting on George Point, just north of the reserve, and at Race Rocks in the eastern entrance of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This group was filmed one afternoon from the Pearson College dive boat, note they had a habit of stretching their necks up vertically. This is a rare event to have these birds this far North but the records from the daily water samples taken at Race Rocks in October and November of 1997 indicate the highest water temperatures since records were first made in 1927 and the lowest salinities since the first records in 1936.
ADDITIONAL NOTE: In the fall and into December, 1998, one lone Pelican was seen frequently in Pedder Bay,and in the fall of 2006 several weer photographed at Race Rocks.. see link.
