In February 1999 the hydrographic survey boat from The Institute of Ocean Sciences in Sidney, B.C. has done an acoustical bathymetry program which has mapped the seafloor around Race Rocks to a depth of 100 meters.

Story 3: Surveying the intertidal zone

THE EXERCISE
We have developed an exercise that allows one to take images from the transect file on the internet and process them, using the computer in order to quantify the ecological niche of organisms. The example provided is from the intertidal transect files from The Race Rocks ecological reserve, in Southern Vancouver Island, Canada. Follow through the steps as indicated below.

Story 4: Macroalgae of the Race Rocks Marine Protected Area

There is great biodiversity in the Macroalgal species at Race Rocks .. This file will describe some of the species present and will be added to as time goes on. A herbarium of the species found in the reserve is kept in the Biology and Marine Environmental Systems lab at Lester B. Pearson College.
