PART C

Research Question: What are the differences in the characteristics of the tides at three locations in the Juan de Fuca and Georgia Strait?

In comparing three different sites at the beginning, middle and end of the strait, is the maximum height at these locations reached concurrently or consecutively?

1.             Print out a map of the Juan de Fuca Strait. Your teacher will help you locate where Bamfield, Race Rocks and Nanaimo are located (This information can be found at the Canadian Tide Tables website by searching through the sections). Label each location.

2.             Go to the Canadian Tide Tables website.

3.             Go to section 2 and select "Beecher Bay" (spelled as Becher Bay here), if not already selected. This is the area closest to Race Rocks.

4.             Go to section 3 and select "Pacific Standard Time".

5.             Go to section 4 and select "3 day period".

6.             Press "Query".

Up will come the tides for Race Rocks area. On the left hand side of the chart is the height of the water and on the bottom is the time of day, over the next three days. Your teacher will print a copy of this table out.

7.             Repeat steps 2-6 for "Bamfield" and "Nanaimo" areas.

8.             Looking at the hourly heights predicted in the table at the bottom of the printouts, fill out the following chart for a 24 hour period.

Location

Tidal Range for each location

1st Max Tide Height

Time of 1st Max Tide

2nd Max Tide Height

Time of 2nd Max Tide

Bamfield

Beecher Bay (Race Rocks)

Nanaimo

Answer the following questions:

a)     Where was maximum tidal height reached earliest in the day?

b)     Where was maximum tidal height reached last in the day?

c)     Using the information from the hourly heights table determine the differences in the times that high tide was reached at the following locations:

Bamfield to Race Rocks

Race Rocks to Nanaimo

Bamfield to Nanaimo

9.             Put the maximum tide times on the map at each location.

10.           From the max tide times, figure out the flow of the current and draw an arrow on your map showing its direction.

11.             Why do you think the tidal ranges are smaller at Beecher Bay compared to Race Rocks and Nanaimo? (What other factors would influence tidal height?)

12.          From the above information, figure out when the tides would be highest and lowest at Race Rocks and go to the Race Rocks website. Select preset 4. View the rock in the foreground at low tide. Go back to the site at high tide. Can you still see the rock?
