April 25-May 6, 2005: Construction of engine room extension to accommodate storage batteries, and mitigation of increased building footprint by concrete removal in another island location.
A narrow strip of grass will have to be removed in order to provide sidewalk space around the enlarged battery storage area of the engine room extension. The grass was examined and it was determined there were no rare species present. Indeed, most of the soil on Race Rocks has been brought ashore by barge in the early years of the light station. As mitigation for the extra building footprint and sidewalk space, we looked around the island to find an equivalent area we could restore to nature. This old concrete "pathway to nowhere" by the tank room was chosen. Years ago there was another building here.
jackhammering old path
Mike did the job May 1 with a jackhammer . The pulverized concrete. After cleanup of the old sidewalk site. In a few months this will restore to natural cover, and we will help by providing seeds of native species of grasses.
A crew from Roma Construction brings the construction materials onto the island by Sea truck on April 23. Materials are maneuvered into place by hand.
Setting down construction materials. Mike Slater runs the controls of the winch in a strong west wind that day. The winch house.
Jackhammer pad engine room floor
The old pad is removed. Below it they find the floor of the old engine room. So the sidewalk extension is over an existing concrete area and no larger footprint is needed. Forms are constructed Concrete is poured on May 2
