This was the group of first year students as we arrived at Race Rocks for the annual ritual of the end of term field exam in May 1999.
Wuping and Chris contemplate the new artificial tidepool and attempt to quantify some of the early successional events that are starting to show up.
The students soon dispersed to six stations and rotating through each in turn encountered a variety of new situations involving application of processes learned throughout the year.

New experiences are fair game even for an exam and Ed and LA are intent on handling the situation.

At this station the students, with some guidance from Sylvia got a chance to contribute to the Race Rocks Herbarium, with collection, identification and
preparation of a macroalgae specimen.
Martin and Laura are devising a way to quantify the algal zonation patterns in one corner of the island with a particularly well organized set of algal layers.. Intertidal Invertebrates find a particular niche in response to the abiotic factors of the island. One vertical surface that forms a handy location for observing and quantifying these organisms is on the docks at low tide. Datra does a close-up examination of barnacle zonation , and Michaela and Adrian try to pin point the range of a limpet species in order to determine the length of time of submergence in this area.
