In this set of pictures taken by Ryan Murphy in June 2002, the low intertidal habitat of Phyllospadix is visible. We usually consider the species to occupy the first half a meter of the low tide band on the shoreline at Race Rocks. The exception is when it grows in a tidepool that has sufficient depth to maintain the low temperatures needed for survival.

A mix of brown algae such as Alaria occurs here too. These 5 pictures were from the west side of the bay at the docks. By September, Phyllospadix has produced seeds in the pod that has replaced the flowers at the base of the stalk. At the base of the Phyllospadix plants i the lower intertidal on the west shore of Great Race Rock, a number of species of hydroids, coralline algae and brooding anemone thrive.
Phyllospadix growing at the zero tide level on the west shore of Great Race Rock. Note the associated hydrocoral which is protected from dessication by the overhanging seagrasses. This small peninsula covered with mussels on the west shore is attached at low tide. It becomes an island and then a submerged reef at high tide. It is fringed with Phyllospadix.
