Addition of Great Race Rocks Island to the Ecological Reserve, 2002

Previous to 2001, The island of Great Race Rock had not been included in the ecological reserve because it was leased by DFO as a Coastguard station. The reserve was esentially "doughtnut shaped". When automation occurred in 1997, the process of reverting the lease back to Provincial Lands began. The area for a new lease for DFO was surveyed as an enveloppe around the Tower and Solar panels. This map was produced of that lease.

Following is a Press release available on the internet which records the addition of the rest of the Great Race Rock Island to the Ecological reserve. The local MLA Moe Sihota accompanied Angus Matthews and Garry Fletcher to Race Rocks for the formal raising of the BC Provincial Flag over the reserve. (We are still looking for a picture of this event??)

    VICTORIA -- Most of the land at Great Race Rock has been transferred to BC Parks to be added to the Race Rocks ecological reserve, Esquimalt-Metchosin MLA Moe Sihota announced today on behalf of Environment, Lands and Parks Minister Ian Waddell.
