Phylum: Chlorophyta
Class: Chlorophyceae
Order: Ulotrichales
Family: Acrosiphonaceae
Acrosiphonia coalita (Ruprecht) Collins
or..
Spongomorpha
coalita
Description: This plant is at first bright green and loosely tufted, soon forming dense rope-like axes of entangled, uniserate, branched filaments, up to 30 cm. high. The filaments are dichotomously branched in the lower region of the plant, becoming irregularly alternate or unilateral in the upper region. The main axes terminate in a blunt elongate apical cell; lesser orders terminate in an acute apical cell. Short determinate, curved, or hook-like branches occur, especially near the base, in the rope-like portion of the axes. The plant is attached to the substrate by means of simple or branched rhizoidal filaments.
Habitat: On rocks and epiphytic on other algae in the middle and lower intertidal zones.
Pacific Coast Distribution: Alaska to California.
