Algal:  with reference to an alga.

 

Apex:  the distal end.

 

Biseriate:  in two rows.

 

Branchlet:  a small branch.

 

Bullate:  having a blistered appearance.

 

Bullation:  a blister.

 

Calcified:  encrusted with lime.

 

Complanate:  flattened or compressed and smooth.

 

Confluent:  blended or merging into one.

 

Coralline:  referring to lime-encrusting red algae.

 

Cortex:  the portion of the plant external to the medulla or axial filament.

 

Cuneate:  wedge-shaped.

 

Dentate:  toothed.

 

Discoid:  in the form of a disk.

 

Epiphyte:  a plant growing superficially on the surface of another plant.

 

Filiform:  hair-like.

 

Float:  air-filled structure.

 

Habitat:  the kind of locality in which a plant grows.

 

Hapteron: (pl. Haptera) the root-like portion of a holdfast (usually cylindrical and much branched).

 

Holdfast:  a structure by which an alga is fastened to the substrate.

 

Lamina:  (pl. Laminae) blade-like plant or part of a plant.

 

Lanceolate:  narrow and tapering toward each end.

 

Lateral:  situated at the side; a part of a plant arising from the side.

 

Obovate:  oval or egg-shaped with the broader end at the distal end.

 

Pyriform:  pear-shaped.

 

Rachis:  the portion of the axis of a plant from which subordinate parts of limited growth arise in two opposite ranks.

 

Reticulate:  in the form of a net.

 

Terete:  cylindrical, tapering and rounded in sectional view.

 

Vesicle:  an air bladder or float.
