The major intention of this website has always been to decrease the need to have humans visiting the island by providing all aspects of the ecosystem on line.

It is obvious that any human presence on Race Rocks has an impact on the life of the organisms. Some of it is positive as in added observation of the area for security and enforcement purposes, and the encouragement of research and education. At times however, minimal disruption to animals may occur in transferring boats and people on and off the island and from repairs and maintenance activities necessary to maintain the facilities of the island.

Attempts to mitigate the need to transport diesel fuel for energy generation on the island with the installation and upgrades of an Integrated energy system have resulted in a limitation of the possible harm from oil spills. Any construction that is necessary on the island is always done with a limitation on the environmental footprint on the island. Several restoration programs have decreased the footprint.

In the Management of the Race Rocks Ecological reserve there are several components.

1. An portion of the Great Race Rock Island is leased from BC Lands by the Canadian Coastguard as an automated light station with a lighthouse, foghorn and solar panels.

2. The Island of Great Race was added to the Ecological reserve in 2002. Lester B. Pearson College has managed the island since 1997 under a long term lease from BC Parks.

3. The goals of the Ecological Reserve Management Plan determine many of the activities on Great Race Rock. http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/planning/mgmtplns/race_rocks/racerock.html

This file outlines the guidelines followed by the college in the reserve management.
