fescue grass The availability of water for vegetation on Race Rocks, has major implications for the species of plants which can survive on the island. Not only do they have to survive dessication from salt spray, but abundant water in the winter months and almost a total lack of water from June to September. One of the best grasses to tolerate these conditions is Fescue. Here you can see it growing on the natural rock outcrops on the island.
plants
Since soil was imported to the island in the early years for the gardens of the light station staff, many introduced species came along. Those which can adapt to salt spray and drought remain today.

ET - Evapotranspiration
This is the amount of moisture evaporated off the surface.  Using this data with rainfall, one can determine moisture deficits/surpluses.
It has been calculated based on the temperature/rainfall data as measured at 1.5 metres above the rock surface at Race Rocks.
